Handmade Hugs

It takes a village to raise a child- Let's be part of that village

What is Handmade Hugs?

We are an outreach program within FDP aimed at giving support to new, at-risk moms. We believe children who are loved and cared for in a safe, nurturing environment are better able to grow and thrive. At-risk new moms are vulnerable. It's in everyone's best interest to help create an environment where these moms can succeed at parenting. Handmade Hugs contributes to their success through:

·         education and the

·         handmade component.

Why handmade blankets? Because of the human connection. In addition, whenever possible we include a brief anonymous bio of the people who make and donate to our program. This furthers the connection and creates a sense that we all want the best for New Mexico’s children and families.

Who receives the Hugs?

The new moms might be teen moms still in school, or moms at any stage of life who could use support. They are affiliated with a larger organization who has identified them and provides services for them. These partners welcome the opportunity to review the information with each new mom, familiarizing her with it, and increasing the likelihood she’ll use it.

What’s in a Hug?

A blanket and books!

The handmade blanket says that there are people who are thinking of her and wishing her well — people who spend their time and resources on a gift to lift her spirits and, figuratively, put their arms around her and comfort her as she comforts her baby.

In addition to the handmade blanket, a Hug includes a Baby Love Book and Journals written at FDP, and a children’s board book donated by ABEC Read by Third Grade.

What Do We Need?

New, handmade baby blankets (knitted, crocheted, quilted, tied, sewn, etc.)
